    Dr Sapna Shah

I am currently a ST5 trainee at Barnet & Chase Farm NHS Trust. Earlier in my training I undertook a research post at the Royal Free Hospital focussing on HPV and CIN in HIV-infected women for which I was awarded a PhD by the University of London. I have presented my research findings at many national and international conferences and continue to lecture on this subject at the advanced colposcopy course run by Professor Singer. I am hoping to continue pursuing these research interests in a future clinical career.

    Past BSCCP Co-ordinator
    Birmingham Women’s Hospital, Birmingham,  UK

I was appointed Co-ordinator of the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) in 1991 when it was a very small society with 300 members.  I worked with the Executive Board of the Society for 21 years and watched the Society grow from strength to strength.  During my time with the Society NHSCSP Guidelines were published, Certification in Colposcopy was established and trained Nurse Colposcopists were introduced into many Colposcopy Clinics.  The Society works with all the leading organisations in the world that have an interest in the prevention of cancer of the cervix, and there are now 2400 members. I retired from my post with the Society in May 2012. In 1999 I was involved in founding the European Federation for Colposcopy (EFC) and remain as the permanent secretariat for that Federation which at present has 32 member countries.

Following this, I undertook a two-year research program into the immunology of the female genital tract at the Royal Free Hospital, London. I was awarded an MD for my thesis by the University of London. I undertook subspecialty training in Gynaecological Oncology at St Michael’s Hospital, the women’s teaching hospital of Bristol University and was awarded subspecialty accreditation by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. I am also an accredited minimally invasive surgeon and offer women the minimally invasive approach to surgery for gynaecological cancer where appropriate.
